Hong Kong 2007

Day 6 - August 3, 2007

Tami, April and I headed back to the Hong Kong side of the island this morning. I had a mission...to take a picture of a typical Chinese cemetery. I know it sounds a little weird but I really like old cemeteries. Seems like the practice in this country is to bury the dead along the side of a mountain where they look upon stunning views of the harbors for all eternity. It is a very impressive sight.

Later this afternoon, we all went to work. We had rehearsal in a nearby venue for our performance tomorrow. This performance will be of Road Signs and will present several challenges including translation of some vocabulary into Cantonese, and the relay of translation from American Sign Language and spoken English to spoken Catonese and Catonese Sign Language.

Day 7 - August 4, 2007

Today was our first performance in Hong Kong! And what an incredible experience! The building that we performed in is the Hong Kong Cultural Center (HKCC). It is HUGE. Probably about 2-3 times the size of the Kennedy Center. We performed on a stage that was set up in the foyer area. There were no chairs set up. People sat on the steps facing the stage, or stood. There were people watching from the second and third floor railings. Some folks even brought their own collapsible stools. There were about 400 people in the audience!

After the show, we posed for some photos with members of the audience and then we were whisked away in a bus to the location where we would present a 2-hour workshop for hearing and deaf participants. We were pretty exhausted after all this excitement so we split up for dinner. Some of us had Japanese food for dinner - delicious. (I had Chinese chicken wings!) Others went to a resturant where they had a deaf chef!

"What did they just say?"
