We had another production meeting on February 11th. We
are only a few weeks away from the opening of “The water falls.” at
Olney Theatre. We are so encouraged because our experiments with computerized
dialogue and other special sound effects have been very successful. It
feels so good to reach for something that no one else has tried to achieve.
I am positive that the audience will be captivated by it. Rehearsals
are going well. The set design will be in the shape of a trapezoid. Andres
will be doing animation. So, there is a lot to look forward to in the
show. Flyers have just been sent to the printers and will be mailed out
in a week or so. Look for the flyers in your mailbox or other key locations!
Last but not least, Quest is in need of volunteers to be house managers,
ushers, and box office managers. If you are an energetic and motivated
individual, contact Elizabeth Hill at volunteers@quest4arts.org.
Now that auditions are over and people have been selected for the roles
in the play, we are moving on to the next phase of the production. Andres
Otalora has been cast for the role of Jed. Donna Eads
Salamoff is the
mother. Mike Denninger is playing the role of Grandpop. And finally,
Michael
Harper has the role of the Father. Our creative juices and
energy are really flowing. The most recent production meeting, on Tuesday,
February
4th, was an amazing creative process. This play is extra special to us
because it was written by a deaf professional, Willy Conley. We are so
proud of Willy’s work! In addition, we have a deaf director, Mike
Lamitola. This duo makes for a formidable team.
Artistic discussion centered around the use of light, sound, and water.
Light will be a character of its own. Light will act as a visual medium
for sound.
Sound has its own challenges in this production. Tim, Mike, Willy, and
others are coming up with innovative ways to incorporate sound in the
play. When Jed is talking to his grandfather, voicing will somehow be
done for him via computer technology. Ideas are abounding about how dialogue
will be fed into the computer and then used during the production. Water
will be a major force as well. We have so much to look forward to and
know that this production is going to be a pioneer in many ways. Stay
tuned for more next week!
Well, we are at the momentous start of Quest's second production,
The water falls. Mike Lamitola, Artistic Director of National Theatre
of the Deaf (NTD), is here for the production on a cooperative venture
with Quest. It is so good to have Mike with us. Last night, Tuesday,
January 28th, Quest held auditions for two characters in the play - a
forty year old deaf female and twenty-five year old deaf male. Auditions
were a success and the roles were cast. Things are really rolling along
fast. Already, a production meeting was held and discussion focused on
the challenge of how to make sound visual. It will be so exciting to
see how this challenge is confronted! Today, Mike Lamitola and Tim McCarty
met with Elaine Aiello at Eleanor Roosevelt High School (ERHS) to work
out the details of Mike's artist residence there. Mike will be giving
workshops to approximately 180 students there. We will be meeting again
on Tuesday, February 4th for the next production meeting. More highlights
to come after that!!
